6 style tips for your family session

Probably my most frequently asked question is ‘what should we wear?’, so I’m here to put your mind at ease and assure you that I’m here with lots of handy tips about what to wear and what not to wear.

Every client that books a session will be sent a fabulous Style Guide with info about what to expect from their session, what to bring, and lots of advice. Each guide is designed differently, depending on your session type; bump, baby or family session. You’ll be happy before you even arrive that you’re all looking your best!

Here are my top 6 do’s and don’ts for dressing for your session:

#1 Keep it neutral

Try to avoid bright colours and bold patterns; my studio is white and light, so colourful outfits can overpower everything else. We want your images to reflect love, emotion and connection, rather than overpowering the frame with colour.

#2 Ditch the black

I prefer to step away from darker colours altogether for my sessions, but if you really want to wear a darker shade, try navy. This can be a great alternative for dads who want to wear a trouser - either that or a beige chino!

#3 All-in-ones win the day

It can be so hard to keep t-shirts tucked into trousers or shirts, so how about opting for a cute romper or dungarees instead? It also means we don’t have to keep hiding bulging nappies away.

#4 No socks required

My personal taste is to go without socks and shoes for my sessions. But don’t worry about unsightly toe hairs or unpainted toenails – it’s not that I want to see! Most shots will be close up and won’t show feet at all, but I feel that bare feet help to create a much more relaxed look.

#5 Keep the cartoon characters at home

Unless it’s a subtle pattern, I would prefer no prints, logos or cartoon characters on any outfits. So for kiddies, always look for simplicity and go for plain styles. For dads, ideally, no branded logos anywhere, apart from a small thumb-sized emblem if needed. This way, your images will remain timeless and stylish for longer.

#6 Show a little skin

For mums, whether it’s a bump or baby shoot, don’t shy away from something off-shoulder or with a leg split. I understand that some people might feel self-conscious about being in front of the camera, but Mama, I promise that I have lots of poses and photography techniques to have you looking the very best version of yourself! Light, floaty fabrics and delicate details will be your best friend.
